Oil & Gas

Oil and Gas Industry

With its experience in the North Sea the UK Oil and Gas industry has developed ever more sophisticated technologies to extract oil from more hostile conditions, deeper waters and wells from which oil is not easily extracted. The other significant change is from rig based wellheads to sub-sea wellheads which in itself has technological demands.

Part of the requirement has been for metals which will resist corrosion and erosion from sour wells. Alongside this is the need for reduced maintenance on sub-sea platforms which has driven the demand for more sophisticated alloys to ensure long life and less chance of failure of a component.

The Sheffield region provides expertise in component manufacture in high performance alloys, such as stainless steels and nickel alloys, and tungsten alloys and tungsten carbides. It also has companies providing sophisticated tooling and at the forefront of metals processing technology for oil and gas components.
